Winter salt and plowing damage to lawns

The winter of 2013 will be remembered for many reasons.  Holiday parties, warm weather travels, record snow events and even record low temperatures.  However, the most disturbing memory of the 2013 winter will be this spring when the lawns re-appear from their seasonal snow and ice cover.

Q: Where is all the asphalt and road shavings going to end up?
A: In your lawn next to the road, sidewalk or driveway

The amount of snow plow damage and salt damage to the lawns this spring will be worse than any previous year in recent memory.  We have already had over a dozen salting events and more than a half dozen plowing events through Jan 1.  The amount of snow plowing performed this winter in addition to the overuse of salt on roads and driveways will result in severely damaged turf grass areas along side driveways, sidewalks and parkways.  The following pictures show some of the damaging causes of dead turf in spring.
