Lawn Watering Season Finally Begins!

Lawns need water too on these hot sunny days.

Lawn beginning to show signs of heat and dry soil stress

We have had a great spring and summer for lawns across the Antioch, Gurnee, Waukegan, Lake Forest area this year.  However, the typical mid-summer weather has returned to the area bringing very high day time temperatures, high humidity and lots of intense sunshine.  These harsh conditions quickly lead to high soil temperatures and dry soil conditions.  Bluegrass, ryegrass and fescues that are found in most of the area lawns are cool season varieties that do not tolerate soil temperatures above 85 degrees.  At these temperatures and without water the turf refrains to its natural survival abilities.  This includes the closing of stomata which makes the turf look thin and lose color and a significant reduction in leaf tissue growth.

Watering the lawn before or during these hot and dry conditions will significantly help your lawn stay green and healthy through the highly stressful summer.  Lawn Doctor of Antioch, Gurnee, Waukegan, Lake Forest highly recommends watering your lawn heavily and infrequently during these times.  The lawn wants 1-2 inches of irrigation per week, so 2 to 3 times per week for at least an hour will provide these results.  We also recommend early morning or early afternoon watering so that the lawn has time to dry out before evening.  Extended evening moisture can cause disease outbreaks and watering mid-day during the most intense sunlight times can cause more problems too. If you are not sure how much precipitation your sprinkler is providing, place a rain gauge in the watering zone and make sure you are getting at least 1 inch per irrigation cycle.  If you don't have a rain quage contact us for a free one.
